Now he is old and grey
I clocked that Tom Lehrer's 80th birthday was coming up, and made a mental note to write a celebratory post, and toast his health with some stale champagne, drunk from a sweaty slipper.
However, (in what is a theme of my life at the moment), I failed to do so in time. So, belatedly I'm raising a cup of coffee in his direction, and wishing him a very happy birthday indeed.
International politics can be a complicated business. So whenever you're not sure what to make of it, I recommend simply playing this song:

A sort of Richard Stilgoe, but across the pond. There is no word which translates as 'tolerance' in Arabic with quite the same connotation (there might be some modern contrived term), but this is not as stereotype would have you imagine it. To explain: one bilingual scholar told of how he once met an Arabic speaking Muslim and in the course of their conversation, he tried to explain the the English word 'tolerance', only to met with bafflement. "What a silly idea," said the man, "To think 'putting up' with people is virtuous- good people actually oought to be kind to everyone!" I'm proud to be Muslim!
